Portability and being able to connect it to other devices is also quite useful. Although I rarely have a need for a DVD drive anymore, it would be nice to be able to watch one of my DVD films on the iMac instead of always having to use the old DVD efau108 hooked up to the TV - and what if I had to reinstall old software from DVDs, or do a major system repair without having a bootable external drive available to do the repair from?
